Issue 9.1.23 ~ fall into poetry

c h a n g e !

Welcome to
WHISPERshout Poetry Magazine, Issue 9, Number 1, 2023!

Happy New School Year and welcome back to WHISPERshout. We are looking forward to sharing new original poems by kids ages 4-12 here at what we think is the only online journal of kids’ poetry in the U.S.! We publish a handful of poems twice a month, often with accompanying artwork (and sometimes a poet’s photo), and WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK, and to comment on what you read here.

If you are a teacher developing a poetry habit in your classroom, you might find this is the all the lesson you need! Email whispershoutmagazine@gmail.com to receive each issue direct to your inbox.

The farmer’s markets are still full of peaches, but the season is changing…and here come the APPLES! This poem was composed by a group of PreK kids who had just read THE APPLE PIE THAT PAPA BAKED by Lauren Thompson. It has a lot of rhythm, just like the book!

“Apple Pie” - PreK, MD

As fall comes our way, we start thinking about LEAVES…but most now are still green, as in the artwork arranged by Ruth, below. In her poem, Ruth explores the ideas of perfect and UNperfect. Look how her leafy artwork has her thinking of pen and ink, mama and baby, harbor and garden. It’s one of those poems that maybe doesn’t make “regular sense”…but it does make emotional sense! See how you feel after reading it.

“unperfect” by Ruth - 3rd grade, MD

Next up is another fruit poem by a 4th grade poet. Look at the juicy oil pastel illustration, two oranges in a sea of stars! In this poem, Taylor does a lot of describing, but most powerfully uses a simile to express what the orange swirling around their mind feels similar to: “like a buzzing sweet bird/yummy fire explosion…” Wow.

“orange, orange” by Taylor - 4th grade, MD

Our final poem this week was composed by hand on a lake house chalkboard. Sometimes all you need are four solid words! Thank you, Joshua, for this memory of summer.

“boat ride sun rise” by Joshua - age 7,
somewhere near a lake

That's our four poems for this issue. Let us know what you liked by leaving a comment below.

See you next time for Issue 9.2, which will publish on Wednesday, September 27—if we have received new poems!  And remember, you can submit YOUR work by email--just click the button below--and thanks for WHISPERshouting with us!
