Issue 1.1.24 ~ snow!

snow!

Welcome to
WHISPERshout Poetry Magazine, Issue 1, Number 1, 2024!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We’re kicking off 2024 by continuing to publish new original poems by kids ages 4-12. Look for a handful of poems each month, often with accompanying artwork and sometimes photos.
WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK, TOO,
and to comment on what you read here.

This month’s issue features “snoems”—poems about snow! See which one you like best!

POEM #1
“little cat feet” by Josie H. - Kindergarten, MD

This is one of those poems where the words might not make literal, logical sense…how can cat feet be the snow? But there are a lot of interesting answers to that question! Are little cat feet like snowflakes falling chilly and cold? Are your cat’s feet cold on your arm like snow when they pat you? What other ideas does this poem suggest?

POEM #2

“The winter coldness” by Ale G., 3rd grade

In this poem, Ale writes one single, simple sentence—but how it makes us feel! The title, the first line, the last two lines are FULL of winter cold, but the middle, the heart of the poem, seems very warm: me and my dad lie on the/grass looking at the stars. Or maybe this poem gives you a different feeling…can you put it into words?

POEM #3
“Snowflake” by Jack - 4th grade

Here Jack used rhyme in two ways to create a poem that really sounds good to our ears and feels good in our mouths. Cold and fold, down and gown are end rhymes. Can you guess why they’re called that? White with no light is an internal rhyme, with the rhyming words together inside the same line. The image or mind-picture here is interesting too—a snowflake as a crispy white gown that’s too cold to fold!

POEM #4
“The secret of snow” by Desi A. - 3rd grade, MD

In our final poem, Desi speaks directly to the reader—to you it’s invisible—as she reveals the secret of snow through the seasons. There is so much magic in this poem! Let’s go put on our coats of fur…

Those are our four “snoems” for this issue. Let us know what you liked by leaving a comment below! Look for our next issue in February…and if we receive poems from more of YOU, maybe there will be two issues next month!

Thanks for reading!
