Issue 5.3 - art class with words
You probably love art class, and you can name lots of artist’s tools and materials that you use to create a physical artwork. Poems are artworks too, made with poet’s tools and materials—mainly WORDS!
Here’s a poem written about a nature mandala, which is a geometric design of objects or shapes. Desi made a mandala by arranging nature objects and then wrote a poem sparked by her design.
“Beautiful Pond” by Desiree - 3rd grade, MD
The next poem was written about an artwork made with oil pastels, inspired by the flower paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe. Emma’s poem plays with the idea of “extreme close-up” on a flower, which she borrowed from Georgia O’Keefe’s exciting. Do you notice how Emma talks to her readers?
"One Beautiful Flower” by Emma - 4th grade, MD
The next poem is written about a collage made from painted papers. Notice how Ameera imagined the white pieces as snow! When we write about artworks, our poems don’t have to match exactly what we see.
"Unicorn" by Ameera - Kindergarten, MD
Finally, below you’ll find another mandala-inspired poem. Sam used glass pebbles, acorn caps and pine cones to make a bold symmetrical design.
“pine cones" by Sam - 1st grade, MD
Did you think those were just pine cones resting in diagonal lines? Surprise—Sam imagined them as human beings, lying on their backs looking up at the sky!
